Gladiators – The Heroic Figures of the Roman Empire by Baig
Gladiators were the fighters of the Ancient Rome who were basically employed for the purpose of entertainment. They used to amuse the audience through fighting in various circuses and other theatrical performances. Gladiator fights were considered as a form of art and was greatly cherished throughout the Empire. The gladiators were mostly slaves or war prisoners who were skillfully trained to fight in huge stadiums of Roman amphitheaters. Some were volunteers too who willingly risked their lives in the passion of fighting in the large arenas. They were normally males but sometimes there were female gladiators too.
There were several different categories of the Roman gladiators formed on the basis of their weapons, armor and fighting style. Some gladiators used to fight in pairs, some on horses and some in chariots. Gladiators also often had violent combats with wild animals and fierce criminals. Many times these fights ended up in death. Brave and victorious gladiators were rewarded with money from the Empire as well as the spectators. Sometimes they were given their freedom too. At the end of their service, every gladiator was given a special wooden sword known as rudis. Those gladiators who exhibited utmost level of bravery and skill were selected to become trainers. They used special armor that included gladiator helmet, shield, bracers and swords.
Even today these gladiators are greatly remembered by millions of history fanatics all over the world. The replicas of armor used by them are particularly famous. Many people take part in gladiators’ combats during roman reenactments and SCA events. The character of a gladiator is even more revived with the making of such movies like ‘Gladiator’, which is a Hollywood blockbuster.
