Ancient Roman Sword – The Roman Gladius Sword And Other Military Weapons
The Ancient Roman Gladius Sword
The Gladius was another term for Spanish Sword, but was used extensively in the Roman Republic, which was part of the Ancient Roman Civilization. This is known today as the Short Sword. This weapon was typically 24 Inches in length. The Roman Legionaries went to battle with this weapon around 300 B.C. This weapon is popular and well sought out among Sword Collectors and people who do historical reenactment.
The Roman Spatha Sword
The latin culture refer to the term Spatha which can technically mean any type of sword.
But, most often this terminology is used to represent the lengthier weapons that were highly used around the middle as well as the late Roman Empire. In fact, the Roman Calvary began using these long Roman Battle Weapons around the 1st Century AD. During the 4th Century, Swords were ditched in place of spears, however some migrated to using longer versions of this weapon. Half Swords or Semispathae is what they called shorter weapons.
The Roman Hasta Thrusting Spear
Hasta means a spear that thrusts in the Latin Context. These weapons were used by the early Roman Legionaries in battle. The Hasta was around six feet long, the shaft was made out of ash and the spearhead was constructed out of iron.
The Roman Javelin
Pila was the term used by the Romans to refer to any thrown javelin. Some of the early Roman Legions as well as the Velites used Javelins that were lighter and shorter. The name for these was Veruta. The Roman Army used a heavy type of Javelin called the Pilum. in the ancient era. This weapon was around 2 meters in length. It had an Iron Shank that was around 7 mm in Diameter that had a head with a pyramidal structure.
The method and means the Romans used to manufacture equipment for their soldiers before battle sometimes known as Res Militaris was largely responsible for their victory in many battles against the barbarians and other enemies. Roman armor was especially responsible for the advantage they had over the barbarians which generally went to battle with more crude weapons. Not always however did the average Roman Soldier carry better weapons than the elite troops of the enemy force they were fighting.
