The History of Blacksmiths by Searchme4
Blacksmithing is the art of crafting iron into something useable that has been around for several years. Blacksmiths create objects from iron or steel by forging the metal. They use tools to hammer, bend, and cut the metal to produce things like wrought iron gates, grills, railings, light fixtures, furniture, sculpture, tools and agricultural implements, decorative and religious items, cooking utensils, horseshoes and weapons.
It was during the Iron Age, when ancient man made tools from iron that was yielded from a certain type of rock. It took years of learning before blacksmiths understood the magnetic properties of iron. The European blacksmiths through the medieval period spent a great deal of time heating and hammering iron, they understood the technicalities of iron and perfected both the form and artistic workmanship of the art.
Iron is different from most other materials it does not immediately go from a solid to a liquid at its melting point its extreme temperature range of variable solidity is the fundamental material property upon which blacksmithing practice depends. The first great discovery of blacksmiths was the first compass that used a forged iron needle floating in a round vial. They aligned the molecules in the iron to perfectly forge the needle defining north as north and south as south. Ever since the first compass, sailors could travel without the need of stars or the sun to plot their courses around the globe.
Blacksmiths made domestic items such as the homely gridiron and the pot hook and weapons of war for the soldiers of the crusades, which included armour, swords, maces, battle axes, etc. They used tools such as the hammer and anvil to make the weapons. All work was done by hand, some of the more elaborate art can be found in the 12th and 13th century churches of Europe. Intricate details such as the door plates, hinges, knockers, the window grilles and railings, and the yard fences and gates on the church grounds were made to perfection by blacksmiths.
During the early to mid-19th century both European armies, the U.S. and Confederate armies recruited blacksmiths to shoe horses and repair equipment such as wagons, horse tack, and artillery equipment. They carried the essential tools necessary for their work on wagons specifically designed and constructed as blacksmith shops. Blacksmiths have been in the trade for centuries, and presently too there are many blacksmiths in the UK that are listed on SearchMe4, the UK’s leading online business directory.
