Scots A Language Or A Dialect? by Anna Murray

With the advent of devolution Scotland’s languages have begun to receive more recognition. Scots, the language of Rabbie Burns looks like it might be in for a resurgence. The Scots language is sometimes referred to as Lowland Scots to distinguish it from Scottish Gaelic which is spoken in most of the western Highlands and the Outer Hebrides.

MSPs sworn into the Scottish Parliament in 2011 pledged their allegience in Scots rather than English. The language is being championed by the poet Liz Lochhead in her position as Scptland’s national poet. In addition a survey conducted in 2010 showed that the majority of Scotland’s population still spoke Scots and that most Scots would like to see it taught in schools. Scotland’s First minister, Alex Salmond is also keen to follow this approach ‘We want to see teaching about the nature of the language and it’s literature… and to see teachers using Scots as well as teaching it’ said Scholar Derrick McClure who is acting as an adviser to the SNP on this issue. The UK government as a whole has recognised Scots as a language under the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.

There is some debate, even within Scotland as to whether Scots is a language or a dialect.A study conducted by the Scottish Government in 2010 discovered that 64 per cent of Scot’s saw Scots as a dialect rather than a language – pointing to the fact that Scots speakers were able to speak English fluently without learning another language.. Scots are rightly proud of their rich cultural heritage including the spoken word.. Muirkirk is a historical Covenanter town and one of it’s most famous residents was the 18th century poet John Lapraik, a friend of Scotland’s most celebrated poet Rabbie Burns.

the language traditionally spoken in the Highlands? From Scotland’s population of 58,652 the 2001 census showed.2% were Gaellic speakers – of different levels of ability – particularlty in the Outer Hebrides. In addition, the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 gave official recognition to the language. Outside of Scotland, dialects of the language known as Canadian Gaelic exist in Canada on Cape Breton Island and isolated areas of the Nova Scotia mainland, and to a small extent in the United States, Australia and New Zealand. During difficult years for Scotland Gaellic speakers were persecuted during the Highland clearances and after the 1746 Battle of Culloden. And the 1872 Education Act did not include Gaelic as a recognised language, this led to generations being forbidden to speak in their mother tongue while at School. It’s hard to believe that people who are still alive can remember being punished for speaking Gaelic at school.. The most common class of Gaelic surnames are, of course, those beginning with mac (Gaelic for son), such as MacGillEathain (MacLean). The female form is nic (Gaelic for daughter).

Items that are part of traditional Highland dress often take their name from Gaelic words. Clan as used in clan crested items comes from clann meaning children or family. Claymore a large broadsword, from claidheamh mór, great sword. Ghillie a type of servant, from gille [ki], boy or servant, for example Ghillie brogues and Ghillie shirt. Plaid from plaide [plat], blanket. Alternatively a Lowland Scots word from the past participle of ply, to fold, giving plied then plaid after the Scots pronunciation. Sporran via sporan from Old Irish sboran and ultimately Latin bursa meaning purse. Gaelic words mostly used in Lowland Scots Quaich from cuach a cup. Skean from sgian a knife Both the terms feilidh-mhor and breacan-an-feile are Gaelic terms, the former meaning roughly “large wrap” and the latter roughly meaning ‘tartan wrap’. Highland dress has a great history attached to it, and the words used for each item can be traced back to their Gaelic origins.
