Ground Fighting: The Truth, The Whole Truth And Nothing But The Truth by Guru: Eddie Ivester

The old saying is that 95% of all fights go to the ground! Well, I have a few questions concerning this statement. Where is the documented proof of this, who did the research and what exactly was the research based upon?

The real story is that the only way anyone could conclude this number would be to count any and every fight that someone was knocked, thrown or fell to the ground during a fight. The better saying would be that in 95% of fights one fighter will end up on the ground. If someone is punched in the jaw and they fall to the ground and the other fighter bends down and punches them in the face again, then that does not constitute a fight going to the ground. In most cases if two fighters do fall to the ground they will try and get up as quickly as possible and do not go into some sort of ground grappling match. The percentage of people knowing how to grapple versus the percentage of people who know how to clinch their fist and throw a punch is astronomically in favor of the punchers and because of this most people do not want to be on the ground fighting but instead wants to be on their feet where they feel more comfortable.

Since the initiation of all the NHB (No Holds Barred) tournaments, the general public has been mislead into believing that most fights go to the ground and end up in some sort of a wrestling match, that ground grappling is ground fighting, that ground grappling styles are a superior self-protection art above all other fighting methods and that these tournaments are real world realistic. The worse part about these misconceptions is that a lot of martial artist have begun to believe them to be true as well.

Lets look at the validity of these so-called NHB tournaments. They say that they are no rules and no holds barred but yet you can’t eye gouge, bite, strike the groin, hit the throat, kick with shoes on and etc… The floor is padded for grapplers of course and there is a referee to make sure that the rules are followed. This does not sound like real world does it! Nor does it seem much like real ground fighting either.

If you look at the history of martial arts you will find that grappling has been around since the beginning of time but was more for sport than combat and you won’t find a war or battle that was ever fought entirely with grappling. Wars and battles were fought with weapons like rocks, sticks, spears, tomahawks, knives, maces, swords, bow & arrows, firearms and the hand to hand portion was stand up tactics that allowed for a swift and effective means of disabling or killing the opposing warrior and then quickly continuing on to the next combatant. In other words, disable as many enemy warriors as fast as possible and this cannot be done by rolling around on the battlefield grappling with one combatant at a time.

The difference between ground fighting and ground grappling is ground grappling is mostly wrestling type maneuvers while on the ground. They may throw a few strikes here and there but it’s still not the same as ground fighting. Ground fighting is grappling, striking and weapons usage while fighting from the ground. The most lethal ground fighting style that I am aware of is an Indonesian style of Pentjak-Silat called Harimau (King Tiger). Harimau is a brutal true combat ground fighting art encompassing grappling, throws, sweeps, jumping, hand strikes, kicks, knees, elbows, head strikes, biting tactics, pressure point hitting, internal training, knife tactics and much more.

Multiple attackers are another big concern in today’s hostile environment. So how can you grapple more than one person on the ground? Lets say that you are really good and that you can handle two opponents on the ground at the same time, ok fine but what about four or five? It is not physically possible for a person to grab and hold four or five people at once. Even a stand up fighter who cannot handle four or five attackers at once can at least move around, kick & punch at the attackers until they have the opportunity to run away and save their butt however a grappler once entangled with one or two of the attackers is now vulnerable to the others attacks and has no way of escaping the situation.

If you are in a night club, bar or parking lot do you want to be rolling around on the concrete trying to arm lock someone or resting in the guard on your back? What if you apply a successful mount and then your opponent pulls a knife out of his shoe, how are you going to block it or get away from it when you can’t even see it or know it’s coming? Your Not! Your going to get stabbed or cut which could leave you maimed, crippled or dead.

Think about your opponent’s friends for a minute, do you think they are going to just stand around and watch you choke out their friend? No of course not, what they are going to do is put a boot up side your head or something worse.

Ok now you’re out on a hot date and your dressed in your favorite clothes that you bought with your hard earned money and they weren’t cheap either. Do you think that rolling around on a restaurant floor, the lobby of a movie theater or the dirty asphalt of a parking lot is going to be good for those clothes? Even if you manage to quote win” the fight you have really lost because your scratched, scraped and your favorite clothes are torn, dirty and stained which equals ruined. Not to mention the fact that the date is probably over because you have to go home and get cleaned up and change clothes.

What about the law? Do you want to be tied up rolling around on the floor when the police arrive only to be caught in the act of disturbing the peace and/or several other law violations or do you want to be gone from the scene? Even if the police decide to take action because the Billy Badass that you defended yourself against is now crying assault & battery, well they have to find you! People who are in a crowded hot room drinking, listening to loud music and standing around in dim light for hours make lousy witnesses.

In conclusion you should now have a better understanding about true ground fighting and why a ground grappling only art is not ideal for self-protection or real world combat and why it is better to strike & move or do grappling techniques that allow you sweep, throw or lock in order to stay on your feet rather than rolling around on the hard dirty concrete.
