SIKHS DISOWN THEIR GURU : GURU GOBIND SINGH
Being surrounded by such a mammoth army was not an ordinary event. It meant that the supplies of food from outside were cut. Some of the Sikhs started panicking and stated that they could not fight with empty stomachs, and expressed their desire to leave. Guru Ji gave them permission to leave, but asked them to give it in writing that neither He was their Guru nor they were His Sikhs.The desperate Sikhs, little realising their foolishness, gave it in writing and left in a hurry. Most of them were killed just outside the fort, falling an easy prey to the enemy’s arrows.
GURU GOBIND SINGH JI : IN THE BATTLE OF CHAMKAUR
After they robbed what they thought was treasure of the Sikhs, but found only broken shoes and horse waste, they resent their messengers to the Guru. They apologised for the attack on the caravan and stated that the soldiers who had committed this crime had been severely punished, and that the mistake would not be repeated.
The Guru was not ready to trust them, but on Mata Ji’s and Sikhs’ insistence He agreed to leave Anandpur Sahib. The Guru and His Sikhs had not travelled far when the enemy showed his true colours and launched an attack on the unprepared Sikhs. A fierce battle was fought on the banks of river Sirsa, leading to a huge number of Sikh casualities. Guru Ji crossed the river, accompanied by only 40 Sikhs and two elder sons. The family was disintegrated. Mata Gujri Ji and two younger sons were taken to safety by Gangoo, the chef, to his own village. Guru Ji approached Chamkaur with lakhs of royal soldiers chasing Him. Guru Ji and His men took positions in the house of a landlord at Chamkaur Sahib. This was a strange battle, an army of ten
lakh fighting just the Guru, His two sons and forty Sikhs. The Sikhs launched a massive raid, and for once the enemy touched its ears. When they exhausted their ammunition they came out bravely to fight with their swords.
SACRIFICE OF TWO ELDER SONS OF GURU GOBIND SINGH JI
When Guru’s eldest son, Ajit Singh, saw his few Sikhs fighting such a massive army, he seeked Guru’s permission to fight himself. The Guru consented without a hitch and decorating his sword He sent him to fight, accompanied by five Sikhs. He sent a blitzkrieg down the enemy’s throat, killing scores of them before succumbing to a sword. Immediately after his brother’s brave sacrifice, Jhujhar Singh, the younger one, took Guru’s permission and launched into the battle bringing another flash of lightning, accompanied by five Sikhs, awarding death to dozens before sacrificing himself. Guru and His five Sikhs were the only ones left in the fortification. The Sikhs urged the Guru to escape to safety, but the Guru was reluctant to leave them alone. The five Sikhs, acting as the Guru Panth, passed a resolution commanding Him to leave. The Guru who had been a disciple Himself, had to obey and agreed to leave. In the silence of the night, He went out roaring like a lion, challenging the enemy and cutting to pieces anyone who blocked His way. He went through Maachhivaada into theMalwa region. There He received the news of sacrifice of Mata Gujri and two younger sons, who died protecting the religion, for which He thanked the Lord.
